During our time participating in the STEAM Futures conference on March 18, the team piloted a soft introduction to an upcoming program around drones and their increasing effects on a range of industries. Each session started with a short presentation on the types of drones, licensing, flight restrictions, careers, and spatial data science.

For example, did you know drones are used to perform detailed analysis of areas bushfires have recently been through where the terrain may still be hazardous for emergency services and recovery teams to access? This can provide more immediate feedback on the affected areas and allow recovery teams to more accurately plan their response.

Participants were then given a short introduction to the safety requirements of flying drones indoors and given a taste for flying using DJI Tello Edu drones in Viewbank Secondary’s gymnasium. Completing a short training flight before being provided with time for a bit of free flying.
