Industry Focus

Industry Partner
Developed in collaboration with Repurpose It, a local closed loop waste and recycling business, this program introduces students to the world of spatial data science and its industrial applications. Spatial Data Science combines big data with powerful collection tools and geographic information systems (GIS) to explore complex ideas and gain new insights. GIS helps users understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context to empower decision making.
Students take on the role of environmental scientists to collect and analyse spatial data for Repurpose It in order to propose changes to an expansion at the Epping site. As part of the program students explore drone careers and applications, learn to operate indoor drones, program an optimal flight path, and process and analyse spatial data using industry standard software to solve a series of authentic problems.

Success Criteria
- Control a drone in a safe manner
- Process spatial data using industry standard software
- Conduct simple data analysis using industry standard software to propose solutions to defined problems
Technology Skill Ups Available

Drone Control
Students learn about drone applications and flight safety, how to fly a drone and how to program a flight path in preparation for data collection.

GIS Mapping
Introduction to Geographic Information Systems and how they can used as a mapping tool for environmental analysis and planning.
